What leaves change about roof drainage
A roof is built to move rain off the building. Leaves change that job when they collect in a valley, cover a gutter outlet or gather around a commercial drain. The material itself may still be intact while the water path is restricted.

Water needs a clear path at the edge
A house gutter receives runoff at the eave and carries it to an outlet. When the outlet is restricted, water can back up or spill in a place the roof edge was not intended to handle.
A low-slope commercial roof has a different route through drains or scuppers. Debris around the opening slows water leaving the surface and can keep seams and flashing wet longer. Cleaning the opening and evaluating the roof connection are related tasks, but one does not automatically replace the other.
A valley is carrying more water than one slope
A valley receives rain from adjoining roof slopes. Leaves and small debris can hold moisture along that concentrated path. If the valley lining or nearby shingle courses are already damaged, water has more opportunity to find the weak detail.
That does not mean leaves diagnose a leak. The roofer still needs to look at the lining, material condition and route water takes. Branch contact, lifted shingles or damaged gutters can add separate concerns.
